When I was a little girl, I enjoyed reading. It’s one of my favorite past times. I remember getting lost in a book, visualizing everything, and being very invested in some characters. During my teenage years, I often visited my local library to check out 3-4 books at a time and often stayed inside to read a book in ONE DAY. I remember my friends and I having long conversations about our favorite parts of books, things that we thought the author should have added, and so much more. Now that I am an educator, I’ve noticed that a large percentage of my students do not have the same enjoyment for books that I had as a child nor do they have books at home. I thought, how can I change that? A book club! Yes, a book club is the perfect way to do this, BUT, I wanted more than a book club that would build a home library. For years I’ve noticed how my PreK and kindergarten students struggled with answering basic comprehension questions after a read aloud. And for that reason, parents were included in the book club concept. I wanted to equip parents with tools to develop their child’s reading comprehension. The Akwaaba Akademy Children’s Book Club is a win-win for both children and parents. Every month, parents will receive a book selection that can be purchased from Amazon or your local bookstore. You will also receive a reading comprehension question guide with tips, writing prompts, and writing templates for the writing prompts. The questions range from general to book specific. Each time that you read to your child, you will have a different purpose for reading, therefore, you will select questions specific to that purpose. For example, if your focus is to identify characters and setting, then you will select those questions from the list. You don’t want the focus to be on 7 different skills because it can become overwhelming for young learners. There are developmental writing tips included to explain what your child’s writing should look like. The structure of the book club was designed to mirror routines that are followed in a classroom to reinforce what your child is learning or provide exposure if they haven’t learned the skills yet. The book club is suitable for children in PreK and Kindergarten, ages 4-6.
Sounds like a club you’d like to join? You can be a member by signing up HERE.
